10 Years in the Netherlands

I moved to the Netherlands on the 20th of December 2011, and I'm still here

What I love

  • The people, they're very open, they say what they mean. Extremely polite compared to England in my opinion. And I think they're genuine in the things they say .e.g. giving a compliment.
  • The language, there are some words and phrases that just don't translate.
  • How clean and modern everything is.
  • The roads, they're easy to navigate and well maintained. I've driven in a bunch of countries now and would not choose any other roads. The second you go across the border to Germany or Belgium it gets bumpy. I've also tried to drive in England, I find it impossible, it's like a circus.
  • Public transport, The trains here are beautiful. I barely use them these days, but when I do they're fast and reliable.
  • The traditions/events, from Sinterklaas to the 4Daagse they have a lot of events that people are passionate about. If you take the time to learn about them and participate you'll have a great time.
  • The radio, Qmusic for life, they swear, it's interactive, upbeat and I have it on for most of the day while working, driving, or doing chores around the house.
  • The music in general, it's different from British and American music, I don't have a favorite genre and that's what makes it fun for me.
  • I always feel safe.
  • The lack of big stores. They do have McDonald's and some other chains, but there are a lot of thriving small stores, cafe's and restaurants which I love.

What I hate

  • The food.
  • Sitting in a circle at a birthday party.

How I got here

I met my ex online, he's Dutch and lives in Apeldoorn, I came to visit him in the summer of 2011 and had the best time. I went back to England and started college and realized that it wasn't for me.

In December I came back to visit and never booked a ticket home. We lived with his parents for around a year and then finally moved out. I worked at his parent's photo studio for a while and delivered the mail. Since then I've lived in 6 apartments mostly in Arnhem which is a city close by and continued my career as a developer.

Future

One thing's for certain, I will never move back to England, I do go back frequently to visit family, however, it's not a place I love or feel at home. Whenever I do visit I get homesick quickly and want to come back to the Netherlands.

I want to buy a house with my boyfriend with a big garden for our dogs.

I don't see myself living in the Netherlands for the rest of my life, for the foreseeable future, yes, but when I have enough money I want to go to Australia or somewhere else warm and experience something new.

It's been a great 10 years, full of ups and downs, life lessons, and finding out who I am. Here's to the next 10!
